Head to Dania Beach, the oldest city in Broward County, which sits immediately south of the FLL runways and has two distinct pulls that most travellers ignore: a concentrated antiques strip on Federal Highway and a historic jai alai fronton that opened in 1953. This is not a beach town impersonating Fort Lauderdale. It is a quirky, practical pocket with its own identity, and it works best when you treat it as a deliberate stop, not an accidental layover.

Dania Beach incorporated in 1904, decades before the airport arrived. That timeline matters. The antiques corridor along US-1, roughly from SE 1st Street to SE 5th Street, grew out of a pre-automobile commercial spine, which means it is walkable in a way that most of Broward County is not. Park once and browse three blocks of independent shops selling mid-century furniture, vintage jewellery, architectural salvage and Florida ephemera. The reason to prioritise this strip over a mall is the density. No other stretch between Miami and Palm Beach packs this many standalone dealers into a half-mile. Set aside two hours minimum. Arrive by 10:00, before the Saturday crowds build, and buy the small thing you see first. It will be gone when you circle back.

Jai Alai and the Casino Floor

The second draw is The Casino at Dania Beach, at 301 E Dania Beach Boulevard. The current facility opened in 2016, but jai alai was first played on this spot in 1953. The fronton, historically called Dania Jai-Alai, runs live games on a schedule that changes seasonally. Call ahead to confirm the evening session. If no live matches are on, the pari-mutuel simulcast wagering runs year-round, and the casino floor offers slot machines and poker. This is not a resort casino. There is no luxury hotel attached, no celebrity chef restaurant. The Casino at Dania Beach is a local's gambling hall with a sport attached, and that is exactly why it works for a short visit. Park free, bet $10 on a player, and be back in your terminal hotel room within 45 minutes. Do not expect a Vegas production. Expect a florid, fluorescent room where retirees and rideshare drivers share a bar rail, and the game itself is violent and fast enough to justify the detour on its own.

Beach and State Park

The beach here is not the main event. The Dania Beach Pier, a 920-foot concrete structure originally built in 1959 and reconstructed in 2001, gives you a place to walk over the water without paying the premium of a Fort Lauderdale beachfront resort. The better sand is two miles south at Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park, formerly John U. Lloyd Beach State Park. This 310-acre park holds 2.5 miles of beach with none of the commercial development that lines A1A in Fort Lauderdale. The entry fee in 2026 was $6 per vehicle or $2 per pedestrian or cyclist, published by Florida State Parks. Bring your own chair and cooler. The park has no concession stands near the water. Arrive before 10:00 on weekends, or the limited parking lot fills. If you are here on a layover and want a swim without renting a car, skip the state park. Walk to the pier from a hotel on Dania Beach Boulevard. The water is the same ocean, and you will save 20 minutes of drive time.

Plane Noise and a Fishing Museum

The International Game Fish Association Hall of Fame and Museum sits at 300 Gulf Stream Way, a 60,000-square-foot building that opened at this location in 1999. It maintains world record categories for all-tackle, line class, tippet class, fly rod, junior and smallfry. If you fish, or if you have ever wanted to see a 1,000-pound marlin mounted in a climate-controlled hallway, budget 90 minutes. If you do not fish, skip it. The exhibits reward a specific enthusiasm.

The noise of FLL is a fact of life here. The 65 DNL noise contour line extends over parts of Dania Beach north of Sheridan Street. The runway usage pattern runs east flow about 70% of the year, meaning arrivals from the west and departures to the east, which sends aircraft directly over the antiques corridor. Light sleeper? Book a hotel south of Sheridan Street or inside the state park buffer zone. If you are plane-spotting, the opposite applies. The observation area at the end of SE 5th Avenue gives you a clear view of 10L/28R, the 9,000-foot runway, and 10R/28L, the 8,000-foot runway. FLL handled 36 million passengers in 2025, with over 700 average daily aircraft operations. You will see planes. Accept that as part of the atmosphere.

Do not build a trip around Dania Beach alone. It is a one-afternoon town. Combine the antiques strip in the morning, lunch at a dockside seafood spot on the Intracoastal, and an evening jai alai session at the Casino. The 3,500 hotel rooms within two miles of FLL make it a practical base for a Fort Lauderdale visit, but book south of Sheridan Street if you want quiet. The common mistake travellers make is booking deep inland near I-95 in Plantation or Davie, assuming it is walkable to the ocean. It is not. Dania Beach at least puts you within a $15 ride-hail of the beach, the state park and the terminal. That is the entire argument for staying here: proximity without the price of oceanfront real estate.

How to Structure a Short Visit

You have one day. Start at the antiques corridor on Federal Highway at 10:00. Park near SE 1st Street and walk north to SE 5th Street. Do not buy the first thing you like. Prices drop by negotiation, and most dealers expect to come down 10 to 20 percent. Carry cash for the smaller stalls that add a credit card surcharge.

Lunch on the Intracoastal

Eat dockside rather than on Federal Highway. The reason is the working waterfront: you want a spot where fishing boats tie up next to the patio. Order a grouper sandwich, blackened or fried, or stone crab claws if you are here between October and May. Skip the chain restaurants near the terminal. They serve the same menu as every other airport cluster in America.

Afternoon Outdoors, Evening at the Fronton

Afternoon belongs to the state park or the pier. If you have a rental car, drive the five minutes south to Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park. Pay the $6 vehicle fee at the entrance booth. Walk north along the beach away from the parking area. The crowds thin out after 300 yards. If you are on foot or bicycle, the pedestrian entry costs $2.

Evening at The Casino at Dania Beach. Arrive one hour before the first live jai alai match to get a seat near the fronton. The betting minimum is low, often $2, and the tellers will explain the quiniela and perfecta bets if you ask. Do not bet more than $20 total. The house edge is steep, and you are here for the atmosphere, not the payout. Finish at the Casino bar, which is cheaper than anything on the beach side of A1A.
