But first-timers are surprised by how much the experience revolves around a single strip, A1A, and how quiet the downtown core feels outside business hours. The spring break chaos of decades past has been replaced by upscale yachting and dining, yet the city still struggles with a disjointed, car-dependent layout that makes spontaneous bar hopping on foot harder than expected. Davie is the inland counterpoint to that coastal polish. Its identity is built on western-themed architecture, 165 miles of bridle trails maintained by the town, and the 20,948 students enrolled at Nova Southeastern University's main campus. The beach is a 20-minute drive east. There is no walking route, no scenic promenade, no water taxi that connects you to the ocean. You drive. That is the point.

The second is an event at Nova Southeastern University, whose main campus at 3301 College Avenue straddles the line between Fort Lauderdale and Davie and houses gallery spaces inside the Alvin Sherman Library at 3100 Ray Ferrero Jr. Boulevard. Everything else about this town, the rodeo, the equestrian culture, the fact that it functions as a residential suburb rather than a tourist district, is a bonus for travellers who choose to base themselves here for the lower lodging costs and the proximity to I-595 and Florida's Turnpike.

You do not come to Davie for a walkable vacation. You come because you want a home base that is 12 miles from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, 25 miles from Miami International Airport, and close to the car-based exploration that defines South Florida outside the beach strip. You come because you want to see Flamingo Gardens without fighting beach traffic. You come because your kid is visiting Nova Southeastern and you need a hotel that does not cost a fortune in January. Flamingo Gardens: the Primary Reason to Visit

Flamingo Gardens is not a zoo. It is a wildlife sanctuary on 60 acres, founded as a citrus grove and botanical garden in 1927. The collection now includes more than 3,000 species of tropical and subtropical plants and a sanctuary housing over 90 species of native Florida wildlife. The flamingos are there. So are alligators, otters, panthers, and bald eagles that cannot be released back into the wild.

Arrive at 9 a.m. when the gates open. The morning light is better for photography, the animals are more active before the heat builds, and the parking lot at 3750 S Flamingo Road is still empty. The rodeo sells out. If you are not, the grounds still function as a venue for equestrian events and livestock shows throughout the year. Check the event calendar before you assume the grounds are open for casual visits. They are not a museum. They are a working facility.

If you have no interest in horses, this part of Davie's identity will not sell you on the town. But it explains something important about the character of the place. Nova Southeastern University's main campus is a 20,948-student operation founded in 1964. The campus brings a younger, more transient population to the western end of Broward County than you would otherwise find in a bedroom suburb.

The Alvin Sherman Library at 3100 Ray Ferrero Jr. Boulevard is the largest library in Florida and functions as a public university library. Walk in without a student ID and use the spaces, including the gallery spaces that host rotating art exhibitions. The NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale is not on campus. It is at 1 E Las Olas Boulevard in downtown Fort Lauderdale, a 20-minute drive east. Do not drive to Davie expecting to see the art museum. That is a separate trip on a different day.

Campus events are the main reason a traveller would interact with NSU. The university hosts concerts, lectures, and athletic events throughout the academic year. If you are planning a trip around a specific event, book lodging in Davie or the western suburbs. If you are not attending an event, the campus is pleasant to walk through but not a destination in itself.

Why Base Yourself In Davie

The most practical reason to stay in Davie is cost. Hotels are cheaper here than on Fort Lauderdale Beach by a significant margin, especially in peak season from December through April. The trade-off is that you need a rental car or a ride-hailing budget for every journey. The beach is a 20-minute, $25 ride away with no scenic walking route. The airport is 12 miles east. Everglades Holiday Park for airboat rides is a 40-minute drive west. Shark Valley in Everglades National Park is an hour southwest. Sawgrass Mills Mall is 15 minutes north.

Budget for a rental car. Ride hailing from Davie to the beach and back twice in a day will cost you $50 to $80. A rental car for a week at local rates costs less than that and gives you the freedom to explore the western suburbs, the Everglades, and the turnpike corridor without watching your phone's fare estimate climb.

Do not book a hotel deep inland near I-95 or in Plantation under the assumption that you can walk to the ocean. That mistake costs travellers time and money. Davie announces itself honestly. It is the western anchor of Broward County, not a beachfront town in disguise.
